“Israel using hunger “as a weapon” of war against the Middle East”.
Then she pushed the paper aside, placed her head on the table, and wept. Observing her brokenness, I went over to her and peered on the damp pages.
She raised and blurted “When will this stop, Marlene?”
“I don’t know, Joy, according to news items, Mister Barkat refuted this statement.
“Do you believe he would acknowledge it?” asked Joy.
She took up the magazine and ranted “There is destruction of facilities for civilian survival… They are blocking the delivery of water, food, and fuel impeding humanitarian assistance… Oh God”.
She sighed.
“Why do you think the United States, Jordan, and the United Kingdom are airlifting food? And still, and still, many Palestinians die. Some (after a long wait) drown as they swim to get the pallets that have landed in the sea, and some die because the parachutes fail.”
“Joy, I feel your pain and I too am trying to understand this chaos; Look at this Joy the fact that help is being given, is a sign of hope.”
Joy interrupted. “This thought just came to me, are there any believers among the Palestinians?”
“I think so. While suffering, starvation, famine, and even war there is always hope and miracles. Hunger has driven many people to extremes even in the Old Testament period.
For example, during the Syrian invasion of Samaria, the famine was so harsh that two women decided to eat their sons. The thought of such an action repels me. This solution is inhumane.
So, the two of them cooked the first son and both shared the feast. When it was time for the other son to be used as a meal, the other woman hid her son”.
“Wait, the other woman could not bring herself to eat her flesh and blood!” remarked Joy.
“This story came to light as the woman complained bitterly to the king.
Here is another situation where four leprous men who should be in isolation took a bold step. They reasoned among themselves, why are we sitting here? If we sit here, we will die, if we say the famine is in the city, we will die there. After much contemplation, they decided to go to the Syrian campsite to hand themselves over to get food. They went at twilight, but to their astonishment, no one was present, so they entered the camp and went to the tent where food, clothing, and jewelry were all present. They ate and drank, took clothing, gold, and silver, and hid them.
Afterward, they realized that they should share this great tiding with the king’s household. They went to the gatekeeper of the city and reported their findings. This news was sent to the king who sent his men to investigate the matter. It was proven true, so the news spread to the masses.
This miracle took place as the Lord allowed the Syrian army to hear the sounds of chariots and great armies so in fear they left their camp in haste. This war came to an end as a result.”
“Marlene, I hear you. As a believer, I am sure that God Almighty does not approve of the use of hunger as mass destruction. Hunger is not just a physical sensation but also an emotional and psychological experience that can strip people of their dignity and hope.”
“Joy, we need to pray for the salvation of these people and an end to this war”
“I agree. Let us fast and pray for seven days.”
