I will not tell my Diptera sisters or brothers. They will buzz around because they are very hungry. It is two years now. A number of my relatives have passed on because of the famine in Israel. However, my grand aunt was able to pass on the knowledge of survival to me and in our fly tradition, we follow the path.
Jacob has prepared, he sits on the stool in the middle of the tent looking out holding on to his walking stick. I cling low onto the heavy fabric in the shadows. The flickering light from the small oil lamp is sufficient for me to observe the faces. Right now, I see a frail-looking old man with red eyes from constant crying for his beloved son, Joseph.
Wait a minute, I have to remove, oops, I nearly lost my balance as I came down too quickly and my wings brushed past his face. If he clapped his feeble hands to remove me, I’d be no more. I see Reuben, and Judah followed by the other brothers. Reuben stoops as he approaches his father, but his father gets up and both embrace each other, and the others follow the same pattern of greetings.
Jacob broke the silence”.
“Reuben, my son, you've asked a hard task to send my only son, Benjamin, with you to this stranger. My heart is heavy. Remember, his brother, Joseph, the son of my beloved wife is gone forever. Do you know what you’re asking?”
“Jacob burst into tears. Then he continued.”
“Oh God, why, why? Simeon is now held captive. Is this a judgment in my old age?”
“Reuben gets down on his knees in front of his father”.
“I can feel your pain, father, father, we are starving. Simeon may never come back if we do not go.”
“He looked at his brothers, then at his father”.
“Kill my two sons if I do not bring them back.”
“Jacob stood. Stomps his feet and use his stick and rub against his trousers.”
“Oh Reuben, I fear for Benjamin’s life. The thought of the loss of one has haunted me and you want me to bear losing another?"
The tense atmosphere was like a thick blanket, Reuben removed from his father’s presence.”
“Judah came forward and lifted his father. His grasp on his walking stick is weakened and it rolled off while he looked him into his eyes, then gently placed him to sit on his stool”.
“Father, please listen. We have no choice but to return to Egypt. The man said we must come back with our brother. If we do not bring him, we will all perish. I will be surety for him. I will bring him back safely.”
“You speak with conviction, my son, I will try to trust you. Is there any other choice in the matter? No. I charge you to go and bring back Benjamin and Simeon.”
“Immediately all the brothers came around their father as if forming a bond. There was silence. Again, Jacob spoke. They stepped back”.
“Tomorrow morning all of you will prepare a present for that man. Carry the best fruits of the land; Myrrh, Pistachio nuts, Almonds, Honey, balm, and spices along with your double money.”
“They all nodded in agreement. The atmosphere was positive with some amount of glee.
“Then he prayed”.
“May the Almighty God give you mercy before the man and that he may release your other brother, Simeon, and send Benjamin back.”
“I feel elated. I now know who the missing brother is, Simeon, Food will be coming, and I will survive. By the way, What a pleading meeting!”
