Eight children cried “Moses!”
“Who would like to share what you remember about the story?” Asked Mr. Simpson.
Lilly stood up, pretty as always in her pink flowered dress, matching pink bows in her pigtails. “I’ll tell the story,” she said confidently.
“Okay class. Let’s give Lilly our attention as she tells the story.”
Lilly began, “Well, it goes like this. Pharaoh gave an order “Kill the baby boys.” One mom didn’t listen. She made a boat, put the baby in it, and sent it down the river. He got stuck in some bushes.” Lilly made motions with her hands as she shared her story.
“A pretty princess saw him there and said ‘Oh! What a cute baby. I think I’ll keep him.’ She took him inside the palace to show her dad, named Pharaoh. Her dad told her it was okay to keep him.
The princess named him Moses. The princess needed someone to take care of the baby, so she hired Moses’ real mother for the job. Why she couldn’t take care of him herself, I’ll never know.” Lilly shook her head in disgust.
“When Moses grew up he bossed around a lot of people. One day he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and he got real mad. He took that Egyptian by the collar, dragged him far away and killed him. Someone saw what he did and threatened to tell his grandpa Pharaoh. Moses was afraid so he ran away to a place called Midian.
This wasn’t such a bad place as he found a man there who gave him a wife named Zip-for-ya, and also gave him some work. He started taking care of sheep. Imagine a prince taking care of sheep!”
Lilly shook her head at the thought of this, her pigtails bobbing side to side.
“Well one day Moses was in the field watching the sheep and he saw fire in the distance. It looked like a bush was burning. ‘Well, that’s mighty odd,’ Moses thought ‘I’ll just tip-toe over and see what is going on.’ As he got closer, suddenly an angel jumped out from the middle of the fire. ‘Good grief,’ Moses said to the angel. ‘You scared me half to death.’
“Then you know what happened? That angel started talking to Moses. A talking angle would scare me too,” Lilly exclaimed, her blue eyes big and bright.
“Well that angel told Moses to take off his sandals because he was on holy ground. I’m sure his sandals were dirty from the sheep and God wouldn’t want us to stand by him when our feet are dirty. So Moses took them off.
Then God said to Moses, ‘I have work for you to do. I want you to go back to the palace and tell your grandpa Pharaoh that he is to stop using the Hebrew children as slaves and let them be free.’
Good-old-Moses argued with God. Now who argues with God and gets away with it?
Moses does.
Lilly’s eyebrow rose.
Using her crying voice Lilly said, ’God listen to me. Who will I say sent me to them? I can’t talk very well, I get tongue-tied. I don’t want to do this. Why don’t you just send someone else. Please, don’t send me.’
But God didn’t listen to him and said, ‘No! Moses you are going. I will be with you. I’ll send your brother Aaron along with you.’
And good-old-Moses was stuck doing something he didn’t want to do. And if you think talking to an angel standing in a burning bush is something odd, wait till you hear the rest of the story about Moses. Mom read it to me last night.
Mr. Simpson is that going to be our story for today? It is going to get exciting if it is.
The only hint I’ll give to the class is this. God does some mighty nice tricks through that old stick Moses is asked to carry. His grandpa is going to be mighty surprised and I bet he will wish he never let Moses be kicked out of the family.
And that is the story from last week.”
Lilly smiled bright, took a bow, then went back to her seat.
Mr. Simpson shook his head and smiled.
