Why do we look back when trying to move forward? What do we hope to learn from the past? Perhaps we want to steer clear of the mistakes of former years and do things right the next time. It is a noble idea but is that what we do? It is not. Over and over, we make the same mistakes and have the same results. Do we think it will be different for us?

We read in history books of kings and despots who ruled with autonomic power only to be overthrown by radicals who sought a better life. The French Revolution began a long struggle against kings, nobles, and clergy. Under Napoleon, wars spread that upset thrones, overturned the privileged classes, and redefined the boundaries of many countries. Beginning in 1789, it initiated the great conflict over totalitarianism versus democracy.

Later, in 1917, the Russian Revolution did the same: the people overthrew the royal ruling family of the Czars for their presumed better way. As the world grew in knowledge and the Industrial Revolution caused significant developments, European History became world history. There were two world wars, and it was the same struggle: would the world be governed by dictators or the people?

I am not attempting to give a thorough history lesson here, but I want to point out how the same thing continues, regardless of the time or the scenario.

Today, it is no different. The same struggle continues. However, this time it is pivotal as those who want an authoritarian government want it to be a one-world government with one ruler. We know of this from the book of Revelation. It is the ultimate struggle between good and evil, and we know Who wins!

People can’t do it without God. Because of the inborn sin-nature, the pattern recurs and will continue to do so until Jesus returns and sets up His Kingdom on earth. The government belongs on His shoulders.
