A champion is not born,
But made.
Like a house which is built –
From foundation to roof,
He is gently made,
From intricate biological fibres.
A champion, like Mohammad Ali,
Gently grows from a tiny seed,
Into a giant tree.
With deep motivation,
He gently grows.
Like a river,
That gently meanders
Around all obstacle in her way,
He eventually lands,
Unto his predestination,
And destination, too.
A champion, like an expectant graduand,
Who meticulously goes through his books,
Jumping from class to class;
Passing or failing his exams,
Until that glorious day,
When, in dignity and splendour,
The chancellor says to him –
‘I confer upon you –
This degree in your championship.’
Have you ever watched,
A champion on stage?
Would anyone tell me,
The nexus between,
Apprenticeship and championship?
When does a champion become one –
At that material nick of time,
When he is announced one,
Is it a process by process?
Or just a moment before?
Are all champions the same?
… A singer like Millie Jackson, on stage?
… A boxer like Mohammed Ali, in a ring?
… A runner like Abuza at Olympics?
… A motor rally star like Henri Toivonen?
… A poet like Shakespeare?
… A space adventurist like Armstrong?
… Roosevelt, Washington, Kennedy, Truman–
Famous Presidents of USA?
And so on and so forth…champions,
Like Serena Williams,
All champions grow from tiny seeds,
To giant trees,
With deep motivation,
They gently grow day by day.
And like rivers that gently meander,
Falling over waterfalls,
And around all their obstacles,
They eventually land,
Upon their predestinations,
And destinations, too:
As champions of their championships.
