“No, honey, not you. I was on the phone with Colette.”
Colette, my new Baby-Christian friend, and I were discussing Philippians 2:12. I read it from my New King James Version Bible:
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”
“What do you think that means?” Colette asked me.
“I think it means that we are to follow Jesus in all He says and does. What is your take on it?”
“I suppose you are right but that is really scary to me. What good things do I have to do to be saved or stay saved in my case, and how will I know if I have done enough? What if I mess up? Then I would definitely be fearing and trembling.” She was visibly shaken as she pondered the meaning of this verse.
“Colette, there is nothing you have to do to earn salvation. Jesus has already fulfilled all the requirements. As you get to know Him, you will see that He loves you so completely that He paid for your sin (and mine too.) When we mess up, we just need to ask for and receive His forgiveness and go on living for Him.”
“I see. It is simple, like everything else. Notice I said ‘simple’ not easy.’”
“Right on, Colette. You are getting it. I need to go tend to my husband now. We will talk soon.”
We said our goodbyes and as soon as we hung up, I noticed a new message on my phone. I first checked on Jack and he was sound asleep in his lounge chair again. I listened to the message. It was Jennifer’s voice:
"Yes, hello. You say everything will work out; that God will work all things together for good. I have heard that many times and I just don’t see it. I don't understand why it doesn't work for me. Please call me when you get a minute. Thanks, bye.”
I smiled to myself. This cell phone ministry was life-giving to me. I tried calling her back but ended up leaving a voicemail:
“Hey, Jennifer! I am glad you called and impressed that you know Romans 8:28. Now I have a question for you: did you read the whole verse? Your answer is there.”

We all to often forget to take in the the power of the whole verse. How many blessings do we miss when we only read in part or skip the message completely?
