July 1944, months after Eichmann had sent 437,000 Jews to
Auschwitz?
Gabriel: Speaking in heavenly or heroic terms, he ought to take
initiative to save the remaining Jews from the jaws of evil.
Raphael: That’s exactly what 34-year old Raoul Wallenberg did.
He hoisted the Swedish flag on thirty-two establishments in
Budapest and manned them with ten thousand Jews ― “Swedish
subjects”.
Gabriel: Did the liberators of the city reward him for his bravery?
Raphael: The Red Army? On the contrary. They arrested him in January
1945, and sent him handcuffed to Moscow.
Gabriel: On what charge?
Raphael: This remains a mystery even for angels.
Gabriel: Did his captors ever make a statement?
Raphael: Yes. Two and a half years after his arrest, they announced
that he died of a heart attack in Lubyanka prison, on July 17,
1947.
Gabriel: Was that so?
Raphael: Not really. Inmates saw him in a labour camp in Vladimir in
the Sixties, and others in an asylum in Irkutsk some ten years
later. His death certificate was faked, his prison record
obliterated.
Gabriel: How did his parents cope?
Raphael: Decades of lies and despair drove his mother to
suicide.
Gabriel: What do the Jews of Hungary say about their saviour?
Raphael: “Although he was very modest and soft-spoken, he inspired
respect. He never promised, he acted”.
Gabriel: Amen.
