“Love you, too, Daddy!” Randy called as he snuggled beneath the covers.
Moments later, there was a cry from Randy’s room and his dad ran up the stairs, and flipped the lights on as he burst into his room. “What’s the matter?” he asked, rushing to his son’s bedside.
A wide-eyed Randy, covers pulled up to his chin, stammered, “Th-there’s a giant in my closet, dad! I saw him! He opened the door and came out when you left. I’m scared!”
“A giant?” his dad asked, furrowing his brow with concern. He plopped down on the bed next to his son and took him in his arms. “Tell me what the giant looked like.”
“He-he was big. Very big. He almost reached the ceiling.”
“Well, I don’t see him now,” his dad said, looking around the room. “Did you see where he went?”
“No. I was too scared. I covered my head and yelled for you.” Randy’s eyes were full of tears and his lips quivered in fear.
His dad tucked him back into bed. “You stay right here. I’m going to look for that giant!”
He searched under the bed. “Not under there.”
He looked behind the curtains and out the window. He lifted the lid of Randy’s large toy box. “Nope, not in there.”
He opened every dresser drawer. “Giants can be very good at hiding,” he told Randy.
Finally he stood in front of the very big closet. It was so big it had two sliding doors. He turned to his son and whispered, “That giant must be back in the closet.” He slowly opened the door and peeked inside. He turned to Randy and asked, “Did he have black hair?”
“Yes!” Randy said, nodding his head. “He did! Do you see him?”
“I do!” said his dad. “Mr. Giant, I need to talk to you right now.” He looked over at his son and winked. “I’ll be right back.”
He went into the closet and shut the door. Randy could hear his dad talking, but he couldn’t make out what he was saying. But soon the door opened and his dad came to his bedside, sat down again and took Randy into his arms.
“Good news, son! That giant’s name is Michael and he is here to watch over you and keep you safe while you are sleeping.”
Randy’s eyes got very big. “Really?” he asked his dad. “Where did he come from?”
“Well,” his father explained, “Remember when you say your prayers and ask God to put his angels over you to keep you safe?”
Randy nodded.
"That giant is an angel sent by God. He’s been here every night since you started saying your prayers. You’ve just never seen him before. He didn’t mean for you to see him tonight. He thought you were sleeping. Angel giants don’t like to be seen. He likes to sit on the bed next to you and keep you safe from any monsters or bad dreams that might try to sneak into your room.”
“Wow,” Randy whispered his voice full of awe. “Why doesn’t he just sleep in bed with me?”
“Oh, angel giants never sleep at night,” his dad said, “They sleep all day so they stay awake and keep you safe.” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Have you ever had a monster in your room?”
Randy shook his head no.
“Do you have bad dreams?”
Again, Randy shook his head.
“Then I guess he’s doing a good job! Right?”
Randy nodded, smiling happily.
“So, now you know that he is a good and kind giant. If you see him again, you don’t need to be afraid because he is watching you sleep and keeping you safe.”
He tucked his sleepy son back into bed, kissed his head and whispered, “I love you.”
“I love you, too, Dad,” Randy said. “And I love my angel giant!”
