Who will love me? Isn’t that the key question looming as we weave our way through life? We learn to attract attention by being precociously molded through submissive behavior or demanding attention through correction and discipline. Let’s unravel our journey here.
Molly Ann drug her balding doll into her mother’s lap and found home. As her mother coddled and adored her little girl, that feeling of intense acceptance and tender care burrowed a deep concave of peace in Molly Ann’s memory bank. It isn’t something we see, it is something we live, forever. Those first moments of intense pleasure when you are finding home is the foundation we return to when we are scalded outside.
The progression of life will ultimately find us groping in darkness as we age. Playground scuffles, pimples that summon harsh insults, too skinny, too fat, poor scholastic achievements, boyfriends and girlfriends whose love sours faster than the speed of sound, and a malady of ills along the journey back home redesign our concepts of life . Dorothy of Oz sums it up while repeating “there’s no place like home”, clicking her heels, and crying incessantly for Toto and Kansas.
Turning through the pages of Molly Ann’s story, we find her at thirty years old, married, clinically depressed, and hospitalized, staring at the Bible on the bedside table at the psychiatric ward where she landed with a rude thud. Lost in a sea of hurt, she stared at the book. Her thoughts returned to a frantic time when she had searched those red words for answers to stop the insanity of her mom and dad fighting over whiskey. Molly had grieved as she watched tears streaming down her mother’s face and her sweet pleas falling on deaf ears. Positioned on the den floor of their country home, Molly Ann agonizingly watched the tormenting scene. Opening the huge family Bible, she searched for the red words. In a little girl’s mind if you can find the red words, you have found Him. They said He works miracles and she desperately needed one. Trusting in what she had heard about Jesus, hope rose from her despair, and she yearned for a reprieve from the tensions of fighting and drinking. “Jesus Loves Me” had indelibly imprinted an emerging hope for better days ahead, but none came. Her young heart didn’t understand the sovereign gift Christ’s love offers man to choose his own destiny.
Leaving the painful memories she resumed her attention to the Bible, then through that flood of emotion, flippantly stated with a sarcastic diatribe, “Jesus, if You think You can do something with this mess, do it.” Over the next three years, day after day, tittle by tittle, inch by inch, a growing reality found its way in her. Where she had been was empty, where she was going was abstract, and considering Jesus seemed her best option. She yielded.
John 10:10 (AMPV) expresses the culmination of life’s progression with these words from Jesus, “the thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy, I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).”
Amid the many pictures Molly Ann holds dear is a picture of Jesus holding a young girl with her arms wrapped tenderly around His neck, her face resting with eyes closed on His shoulder. Safe, accepted, adopted, and loved, now she is never far from home and she lifts her hands in thanksgiving to Jesus, the Lamb of God.
Do you know where home is? Is there some innate drive that is calling you? Jesus is the “Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Welcome home.
Prayer:
Jesus, I find my home in You. Arise in my heart and let Your glory be seen in me. Amen
