One day his wife phoned him from their old country. Their son, 15 years old, was missing. News of kidnapping and killing people from their tribe came far too often. Could their boy have been one of the latest sacrifices his people were forced to pay for no other reason than that they looked different?
After days and weeks of despair, the boy sent a message. He was alive and well, but penniless. He had also lost his shoes.
Later he messaged his father; he was moving forward with the flow of refugees, aiming to join his father as soon as possible.
Finally, he made it. He was with his father. Their joy was palpable, though dampened by the fact that four family members were still in their home country, living in daily fear of danger.
Another year went. Ahmed wondered if he ever would be able to live with his whole family again. Two years had passed since the terrible letter had pronounced that he did not have a family. Their separation had been far too long. They could not be regarded as a family because they had separated ‘by choice.'
Whose choice? The only reason he had left them was to find a place for them to live without fear. He had been a refugee from childhood, moving from place to place between neighboring countries, trying to stay alive. His family was now displaced in their country of origin, not knowing when they might be discovered and thrown out of their latest hiding place.
Finally, the day came. His family was approved. They would join him soon.
Could he trust those words? He had been disappointed so many times before that such news seemed too farfetched. He didn’t dare tell anyone the story before he was completely sure.
They arrived. Ahmed's family received a new start. A gift of a new life.
