Important and irritating; I have mixed emotions when I think of or see a telephone, and I do understand why some folks have turned to texting as their major form of communication.

Communication is a vital thing in our lives. We need to get messages from others that coordinate our and their schedules for instance, and often to simply convey that we are thinking of them; but I could live forever without the sales calls and fund raiser calls and to my silent shame, the time absorbing calls from sister friends.

I love my friends and I want to hear from them but I have not discovered how to get away from the one, two, and sometimes three hour conversations without being rude.

Good manners says that if someone calls you then they should be the one to say goodbye first.

I could garble my speech and disconnect the phone by hanging up making it seem that my phone is malfunctioning, but that is deceitful.

I could say, "It's been nice talking with you but I have an appointment to get to;" but unless I really had an appointment to go to it would be a lie. Besides, who would believe it when the call began at 7:00 p. m. and it is now 11:00 p. m.?

Additionally, the long hours conversations are irritating to me because I cannot fathom how anyone is able to go on and on talking for so long a time and usually about the same subjects as were discussed last time. I just don't get what the need is in their lives that causes them to apply themselves in such a manner. I do not understand why they think I have nothing more to do.

I must figure some way to soothe my stress. I could get rid of the house phone altogether and use only the cell phone, which lives in my car, but I do not live alone and other family need the phone and they do not face my phone dilemma.

I would say that my summation statement about the telephone is that, "It is just like our lives: a blessing when used wisely and a curse when used to waste time and give place to saying things that sometimes should have never been said."

I know how you feel. I have one very good friend who it is hard to hang up on, even though an hour, sometimes two have gone by. I try and keep doing what I am doing with speaker phone on, but that does not deter her. I don't want to hurt her but now I shudder when I hear her voice on the phone.
