It was this question from Satan in the Garden of Eden that first cast doubt in the minds of God’s people. Satan wraps his lies in the most attractive packages. Why? Because the only way that he can hurt God is by hurting us- the ones that God loves. He uses every tactic at his disposal to undermine our trust in our Heavenly Father and separate us from God’s love. Satan wants us to doubt Scripture so that we will become skeptical of God’s word. Through his deceit he tries to offer various alternatives to the truth; some of his sneaky counterfeits include:
Relativism: a philosophy that teaches truth is subject to change; morality is by the majority
Subjectivism: a philosophy that teaches truth is different for everyone
Empiricism: a philosophy that teaches truth must be able to be measured or tested for it to be truth
Existentialism: a philosophy that teaches the truth must be able to be experienced
Rationalism: a philosophy that teaches truth is determined not by God but by man
Pragmatism: a philosophy that teaches truth is cast aside for whatever works
Satan attempts everything he can to get us to believe that we can get away with sin. He is so subtle that most of the time we are caught up in sin before we even recognize his lies. Eve heard the truth directly from God, and yet she was easily deceived by a conniving snake. How much more alert then do we need to be to avoid the same?
Take a moment to look at what the lies look like in your life. How have you been deceived? Perhaps the enemy has told you that it doesn’t matter that the cashier gave you too much change, or that your boss doesn’t need to know that you called in sick when you feel perfectly fine. It is those types of seemingly insignificant things that the enemy tells us are harmless. When we buy into his lies, it opens the door for him to operate in our lives- controlling us ever so subtly until we are in complete bondage to him.
The Bible warns, in Ephesians 6:11 (NIV), “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Satan and his demons are real, they are cunning, they are sneaky, and they want to destroy us, but we have the authority by the Holy Spirit living in us to resist them. The Bible promises that if we do, they must flee (James 4:7).
Heavenly Father, thank you that you make a way of escape for your children. Help us to be on guard against the schemes of the enemy. Keep your Word before us so that we do not fall prey to any of Satan’s underhanded “isms”. The devil may be devious, but we have been given victory through your Son Jesus Christ; he and he alone is truth.
