The vegetable garden now in its 6th year, that we share with those in need has been planted and is doing very well. It takes my wife and I a week or two to plant the 1/2 acre area after the ground has been disc three times to a depth of several inches. We secure help to operate our John Deere tractor to do the disc work over the preceding month, so that the weeds are at a minimum when it is time to plant.
When we as Christians help others I am reminded of Psalm 124:8, " Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth." Yes, our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who created everything guides and protects us through our earthly life, even in the garden. We plant tomatoes, corn, Swiss chard, summer and winter squash and the garden provides about 2 tons of produce we deliver free to churches, neighbors and friends.
It is interesting to see the wild life on the farm turn out to watch us work as we plant the small seeds. They are God's way of providing us companionship, as we do our labor of love, and they seem to know just when to show up to join us. The first day in the late afternoon, we started the garden with the tomato plants, and a coyote watched us from just over the fence in the pasture. They usually run when they see someone but his wild animal was at ease and watched us for some time.
Over the planting time we were visited by a hen turkey who walked by us on two different days. Several times we had two to four geese fly very low over us and land in the pasture. It seems like we could reach up and grab their legs as they passed over us with their welcoming message of geese gobble. On other days ducks would join us and watch us work the garden. Several quail with their very friendly nature would join us as they landed on the white fence that surrounds the garden. They love to have us talk to them and they seem to understand, as they talk back in the beautiful melody that the Lord has given them.
Not to be forgotten is the tame large black crow that is a friend of my wife. When ever she rides the lawnmower, as she mows our large acre yard, this crow is nearby keeping watch over her. He may be resting on a fence post or on the chicken house roof, but the crow is ever present. We also feed the wild birds old bread each day and it attracts, magpies, crows, red wing black birds, blue birds, thrush and we can not forget the ever present quail. We are so ever thankful for the wildlife friends the Lord has provided us.
Trust this Sunday we will be in the church of our choice worshiping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and thanking Him for all His blessings.
