She felt lonely in the cold. Seemed like the chill went right through her. She pulled the quilt up around her neck and snuggled deeper until only her weathered, wrinkled face and silvery hair could be seen.
It was another hour, very early in the morning. She must get up, but her bones complained not wanting to face such a nasty change in weather. Still, she pulled out of bed, the bones creaking with every move she made. She grabbed her warm fleeced robe and wrapped it around her.
As the coffee pot sputtered, she stared out the kitchen window, glad to see a trace of morning streaking in the east. Today, fifteen years ago, her father had passed away. It had been a cold morning too, but an experience she would never forget. Yes, she too would be going to a home where there would be no darkness and no cold.
She sat with a steaming cup of coffee, her Bible, her notebook, and her pen. Outside her window, she saw a single brave leaf light up in the morning sun. She smiled.
Her grandson had left for the Navy. She loved and missed him so. He was only eighteen and facing a cold world too. She picked up her pen and began to write:
Dear Bubba,
Fifteen years ago this morning, your great grandfather passed away. It was a morning like this morning. The cold wind had pretty much stripped the trees of their beautiful coverings. I am looking out the window as I write. There is one brave leaf hanging on for dear life. The early sun is dancing on it and turning it to a glowing red.
I wish you could have known your great grandpa. He was a man of God. He was brave like you.
And, I had spent the night in the hospital with him. I knew he was dying.
It happened in the morning. It wasn't an ordinary thing. The very first stream of sun awakened me. From the window by his bed, one single, brave red leaf was on fire.
I jumped up. My heart was racing. I knew the angels had come for your great grandfather. It was a supernatural dazzling moment. I could see into it. I could smell it. Yes, it was like I was breathing in celestial air.
Right then I wanted to go with the angels. I wanted to go with your great grandfather to that beautiful heavenly home. I moved toward his bed, my eyes on the fiery leaf. I walked into the brightness of the moment, to the light surrounding your great grandfather. Then something invisible like a large hand stopped me. I heard the words, “Not yet.”
I guess it wasn't my time to go then. But, honey, what I experienced that morning keeps me going.
I get lonely. My body complains a lot this time of the year when the summer is past and the winds begin to play with icy knives. Oh how much I love and miss you. I miss so many family and friends. I long for the warmth and comfort of you all. But, I hope you understand that I also long for my permanent home. I am encouraged to know it is real. It will never be cold there.
I am praying for you, my sweet grandson. I know the chill of this world comes to everyone in different ways. You are so far away from me. If I were there, I would wrap you in my arms and shield you from all that is dark and dangerous down here.
Still as I watch the red leaf soaking in a single bit of sun, I know God will answer my prayers for you. I know He is real. I know His angels are real. I know His Presence is like a warm fire, much greater than the sun ray on this leaf.
And so again, I believe in the supernatural. I can trust God to keep you there.
All my Love,
Gramma
