Stone castles with their fortress walls have always been a favorite of mine ever since I was a kid. “The Friendly Giant” was a children’s show that had a castle, moat with a draw bridge, a friendly giant, and his puppet friends a giraffe named Gerome and a rooster named Rusty.

Gerome and Rusty needed guidance and “The Friendly Giant” provided that. In many shows Rusty and Gerome would ask the advice of the giant and he would graciously assist them. The giant was kind, protective and understanding, and shared his wisdom with his friends. His large hands would maneuver the furniture around within the castle. He seemed to be in complete control of all things. He was larger than life. A fortress all his own.

I loved that show, but especially the giant’s voice. It was strong and peaceful with clear direction.

“Look waaaay up,” the giant encouraged. The camera panned the giant’s huge brown boots all the way up to the giant’s smiling face.

I like to imagine God’s smiling face and hear His kind but direct voice, especially when I am fearful and need to be protected or directed through one of life’s tough battles. God surrounds me like the stone walls of a fortress holding back the evil that rages around me. He gives me wisdom when I ask for his help and he understands my concerns. No one gets to me when I am safely dwelling within His castle walls. My God is strong, sturdy and can withstand any and all attacks. He is my mighty fortress.
