was confused. He knew that he was in line to enter heaven, but what confused him
was the surroundings. Where were the bright lights leading him through the
clouds? Where were the pearly gates, angels, and where was St. Peter? Instead he
was standing in a long line like one would at a government office, behind a
frayed velvet rope.
The people stepped up to the next available attendant. "They must be
angels" thought the man. The line of people slowly moved forward. As the man
looked at the people checking in, he found it odd that there were people of all
ages, races, and economic backgrounds. Even though they were all completely
different they somehow looked the same. The attendants also looked different
than the man had thought they might look. They really didn't look like angels,
they looked like many day to day workers the man had seen during his life. There
were a few old men, men who didn't smile, ones that just wanted to move to the
next person. There was a large lady, who looked a lot like the lady who sat
behind the cash register at the coffee shop where the man had breakfast every
work day. There was a man who looked like Santa Clause, with a full gray beard
and a portly build, only he had his long gray hair pulled back in a pony tail
and his face was sunburned. Then there was an attractive, friendly faced young
woman. As the man counted the people ahead of him and noticed what angel
finished when, he knew it would be between the large woman and the friendly lady
who would check him in.
As he anxiously took his place at the front of the line, he waited for his
turn. He noticed that after the people placed there hands on the angels hands
and talked a while, suitcases would appear. These bags were filled with lots of
precious items; gold, gems, clothes, and other valuable things. As he looked at
the people behind him in line he noticed none of them had bags, so he felt
better. He also felt better when he saw the friendly looking angel look at him
and say "next."
"You do know where you are?" she asked. "I think so," the man replied. I
think this is heaven, isn't it?" "Well, almost." the lady replied. "This is the
boarding gate for your eternal home." She looked at the man and the said, "put
your hands on mine and relax, this want hurt a bit." The man placed his hands on
the out stretched hands of the attendant, and suddenly his mind began to be
filled of al sorts of events of his life. It wasn't scary, in fact it was good
to see some of the people of places he hadn't seen for a very long time. After
she finished, the lady said "OK, you are ready, do you have any luggage?"
"I..Didn't know we could bring luggage, so I guess not," said the man. "I
should explain," said the lady, "this is one thing we don't do a good thing in
explaining before hand. You can bring a large bag filled with what ever you want
to your eternal home, as well as a small personal bag that would fit it that
cubicle," she said as she pointed at a small box next to her window.
"Anything?" asked the man, "how can I get it?" he asked. "Tell me what you
want and it will be taken care of," the lady replied. The man at the sunburned
Santa was doing to same thing. He was wanting a suitcase filled with designer
clothes and a small bag of gold. "That could be nice," thought the man, " but
aren't the streets of gold paved with gold?" he thought. "I don't want to bring
junk in to be used for the next paving project."
He looked at the girl and said, "I want the big bag filled with all the
pleasant memories and good times I've known on earth." "Fine, and would you like
anything in a smaller bag?" she asked. "Yes, I want it filled with my desire to
continue to do God's work, as a gift to Him when I go to my heavenly home."
The lady looked up and smiled. "Very good sir, and welcome to heaven."
