a few old photographs
of
wedding pictures to mom
and camping at the lake
and him and his wiry body in a bathing suit
and
one mom took through tears of laughter
of him
trudging back from a trip to the outhouse
with a roll of toilet paper tucked
under his arm
all the time
in all the photos
him
with his unique loopy smile
Only now in
memory
a remembrance of a small
frightened boy and a
father leaving friends
playing cards in the kitchen
to lay down with his son
until I fell asleep.
Only now in
memory
a collage of pictures
of a father
giving guidance, correction,
hugs, deserved spankings,
holding and kissing mom,
and faces of
joy, laughter, anger,
amusement, and love
Only now in
my heart
of a father
dying of brain cancer
and crying as a
priest hears his last
confession and
gives him
his last rites
and comfort in his faith
Finally now
as I am alone
with my photographs
my memories
and my heart
the others all gone
but--perhaps
placing a
small thought
of him
in your heart
with this poem
