The year was 1938. In the old house on First Street, no air-conditioning was available. The July humidity and temperatures were soaring in Southern Indiana. The first child of a young couple was attempting to make an appearance into this world. The baby’s grandmother was a mid-wife and experienced in helping the county doctor deliver most of the babies in the area.

In those days, the bed was placed on blocks to keep it off the floor. Water was boiled on the stove in large pots and the sheets were torn to make cloths. Medicine to help with the pain of labor was not readily available. A birthday in those days was something to celebrate because many babies died during the birthing process.

The young mother had been in labor for many hours. Now, finally, the little child was making its way down the birth canal. But something went wrong. As suddenly as the child began to move into this world, the movement stopped. The child was caught in birth canal. Since the birth was taking place in the baby’s great-grandmother’s old house, there were no special instruments to help safely deliver the baby. The mid-wife grandmother was concerned that the little baby would die in the birth canal. Also, the mother’s life was in danger.

The grandmother had much faith in the Lord. She began to pray that the child would be born and the mother and child would live. She felt that this would be a birthday ordained by God and that the child had a special purpose. She had buried two of her own babies and wanted very much that her daughter and grandchild would be blessed with life.

The prayer of a righteous grandmother was answered. The child was finally born! This healthy baby girl with blonde hair and brown eyes would be able to celebrate her July birthday for years to come.

The child was named on the third day of her birth. She was given the name of Sharon giving Glory to Jesus, Rose of Sharon. Her middle name is Rae. Rae represents the Ray of Light that Jesus gave this family by saving the mother and the child.

The little girl grew up and has always looked forward to every birthday. She was always reminded that under the circumstances, she should not have lived through the difficult delivery. And, that her life is for a purpose.

Each year the celebration gets more and more special for all the years the Lord has given her.
