Howling Urgency

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.
…Ephesians 1:19

My slightly older sister stood on the side walk waiting for me when she heard something that sounded like a cry for help. She listened more intently this time. Thinking I had fallen she jumped the rail and started off across the yard to see what happened.

As she approached I came out the door nonchalantly and she hollered, “I thought you were hurt! What were you doing, Carol?”

Surprised I asked, “What Beverly?”

Then it dawned on me she wasn’t used to hearing our Beagle howl when we left the house. After a couple of minutes he settles down, but if someone is not used to the yelps, they can sound like sirens coming.

“Carol! You scared me!” Beverly said firmly letting me know her heart rate was beating above normal. Our beagle settled down, so did Beverly, and we had a good laugh.

My sister was used to having an attentive ear with her daughter and four grandchildren living with them for the past 3 years, three being triplets. She was always listening for signs of trouble, despair, and a sound of urgency.

Like Beverly I have tried listening to the cries and wooing of the Holy Spirit in my Christian life, but I ignored them more often than not until today. I was intent on my prayer this morning, but something was in the way. I couldn’t pray because the sin of pride lay un-confessed in my heart. Broken, I confessed my wrong thinking as the Holy Spirit revealed it to me, but the guilt still stood around mimicking my attempt to forget my act. Satan reminded me continually of my failure and I chided in about my worthlessness.

God then saw my affliction and drew me close to His bosom and there He opened in plain view why my doing hurt Him, and others. I listened, determining in my heart to not continue in the offense. I saw the tenderness of Jesus, the working of the Holy Spirit, and the love of the Father to rescue me from myself. I vowed to not purposely commit these repeated offenses and asked God’s forgiveness through the name of His Son Jesus.

I listen more carefully to the guidance of the Holy Spirit when I come too close, you know, too close to that space between me and the transgressions that call.

Listen to the Holy Spirit and His warnings of coming to close to an act of sin against the Savior. A gentle persuasion will be far better than a howling or an urgent cry of “You have sinned against God Almighty!”

Listen! Can you hear the encouraging of the Holy Spirit? Or is it the howling affect of the world calling you?
