When I was eleven years old my father took his life. My parents separated when I was two years old so I was never able to form a solid relationship with my father, so I missed him terribly when he committed suicide.
I was angry to find out that he had taken his life because I had such high hopes of him one day taking me away from the life I had endured while living with my mother. You see I was sexually abused as a child by my mother's boyfriend; I was also abandoned and neglected by my mother because of her addiction problems. Following my father's suicide my life became progressively worse. I had come to the conclusion that no one was ever going to rescue me from the dark pit I was living in.
It was the same year that my Father killed himself that I met Jesus; I had received a poem called Footprints in the Sand. I knew in my heart that someone had been looking out for me but this poem confirmed it for me.
When I was weak, he was strong. I carried this poem with me for many years after my father's suicide, I carried it with me throughout my teenage years when I dealt with promiscuity issues, I carried it with me when I struggled with drug and alcohol addictions, teenage pregnancy, rape as well as prostitution and I have many copies of this poem floating throughout my house today..

I was twenty-six years old when I finally cried out for God, and asked for his forgiveness for my ignorance and sins. That day I felt my Heavenly father pick me up into his tender hands and cradle me like he did for me as a child. Today I thank Jesus for walking with me and for talking with me.... because it was him who had carried me when I only saw one set of footprints in the sand.

Footprints in the Sand
One night a man had a dream. He dreamed
he was walking along the beach with the LORD.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene he noticed two sets of
footprints in the sand: one belonging
to him, and the other to the LORD.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of
his life there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very
lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he
questioned the LORD about it:
"LORD, you said that once I decided to follow
you, you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most
troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when
I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied:
"My precious child,
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."
