My father toiled from dawn till dusk digging in a mine. For pennies a day he rose before the sun and never left till it was dark as when he had arrived. My father said for many years he never saw the sun during the week. But he was proud to work and help provide for his brothers and sisters. That is what made him feel good, gave him some self-worth. He worked during the depression, which not many could say back then. Even when you worked a regular job you still had to get by living off of whatever food was available potato skins, not my father's favorite was his sustenance many days. They wanted to give to their families, provide a future for them, and care for them.
Today my children are grown and I have to say one has not chosen wisely in the realm of a mate. Does not, not cannot, has no desire to, nor cares what the consequences are. Work is something that takes up too much of his time that he already has plans for doing things he likes. He thinks everyone around him should help him out financially and should do it without a long drawn out speech about his situation. Which again listening to the speech would take up way too much of his precious time,(Which he already has planned out). Now neither does he want to work but he does not want our daughter to work because again she will not have the time to do the things that he has already planned.
Now if I sound frustrated, that would be kind. But I have found that this is not just one incident, but many young people have adopted this work ethic. I have seen more people in their twenties walking around with canes than I have those over 60. What will our grandchildren be like if they are not taught about responsibility, work ethics, obedience or just plain old feeling good about yourself after putting in a long days work. If things do not change our great grandchildren will one day be asking "What's Work?"
