There will be times when we are downcast and our soul is troubled. At any given time, we could be in the midst of difficult circumstances or challenges. Thankfully God pours out His compassion upon us each day as we require it. Many times His compassion is shown to us through others He calls to action.
Recently in a church service I saw an amazing demonstration that touched me deeply. A couple in our church were standing and singing during the praise and worship time. It was obvious they were feeling some stress as they both looked strained and defeated as they stood among their four small children.
As the praise music continued, I noticed movement to the left of me and I turned my head. It was then I saw one of the “pillars” of our church, Bill, urged by the leading of the Holy Spirit, quietly walk over behind the man and put his arm around him. He gently hugged him and then took the young dad’s arms in his own and supporting his arms, lifted them up in the air so that the dad was now standing in a position of praise. As the wife stood beside her husband, I saw tears cursing down her face.
It was a quiet act that did not bring a lot of attention or draw many looks, yet I had the privilege to witness God’s love in action. I was reminded of Moses on the mountain holding his hands up to ensure a victory. As Moses tired and lowered his hands, the opposing army would advance. One can only imagine how worn out he must have felt as he sat hour by hour. Help came in the form of two men, Aaron and Hur, who took it upon themselves to support and hold Moses’ hands aloft until sunset when the battle was over. Victory was attained because of their steadfast perseverance to help in a time of crisis.
That is exactly what we are called to do for each other. I don’t know what the young mom and dad were facing that day, but I do know that they would have been encouraged through that simple, loving act to stand and praise God - maybe not for the circumstances in their lives, but in their circumstances.
This young dad, by the way, gave his testimony recently in our church. One of the things that struck me was he never knew his father and getting to know God as a father figure was a new idea to him. How God must have delighted in the obedience of the older man to show the younger one the love and encouragement of a daddy.
You can be sure there will be times that God calls us to do little things for others, things that may at the time seem insignificant. Yet, even a small act of obedience walked out in love can make a huge difference in the lives of others and in God’s kingdom.
