Hundred year old paper thin walls weren’t enough to dampen the clamor of war on the other side. Desperately wanting it to end, Marcia prayed for her mother. Tight in her fist was the tiny gold cross of her necklace. Without letting go all night, maybe God would answer her prayer--- she also longed to plug her ears with her fingers; this was her dilemma.
The red wool dress was her best. Hair combed, she set out for her walk through town. St.John’s was the only church she has known, a tiny wooden building in need of paint. The pews lined with families; Marcia instead climbed the steep noisy stairs to the balcony. Maybe she would be closer to God.
All she knew was that she felt drawn to this spot; gazing through the long narrow sanctuary into the eyes of Jesus. There He was in front of her, on a cross with a crown of thorns, his hands and feet pierced with nails as blood oozed from His side. Fixed upon Him, her eight year old spirit was captured. With understanding beyond her years, her mind flooded with --- “Jesus, you suffered much more than me”.
Something deep within her began to change; she felt an unexplained happiness and inner strength. She knew she was never alone, she felt His love for her; He was alive in her heart.
On the path toward home Marcia was captured by a sweet breeze. As if saluting with both hands, she turned in every direction searching for the source. Clusters of tiny purple flowers ignored the pile of weathered boards, pushing past them towards the sun. Tenderly she broke free a few branches. Fragrance filled her steps as she gently held the lilacs close, hoping to bring her mom some joy.
