I Corinthians 10:21- “Ye cannot drink the cup of Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.”
Revelation 3:15-17- “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have no need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.”
Matthew 6:24- “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
The Bible clearly teaches and warns against the hypocrisy of being a lukewarm Christian. We cannot have one foot in the world and the other foot in the kingdom of God. Like Joshua, we must choose this day whom we will serve (Joshua 24:15). We cannot serve God and money or God and material possessions. We must not be deceived by the glitter and glamor of excessive riches, material things, and positions of worldly power.
What is a Lukewarm Christian?
A lukewarm Christian is one who knows the word of God but doesn’t practice the teachings and sound doctrine found within the word of God. Lukewarm Christians are essentially living a life of hypocrisy. They may speak the truth of God’s word, but do not do or live by that truth. They may even warn others about sin and its consequences, when they are committing the same sins, they are teaching others to avoid. Their Christianity is mostly what I call: lips service instead of heart service. “This people draw nigh unto me with their mouth and honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me, But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men,” (Matthew 15:8-9).
The Pharisees and scribes knew the Mosaic Law, but their works and actions as a whole were contradictory to the law. “Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not,” (Matthew 23: 1-3). “But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,” (Matthew 23:5-6). The Pharisees wore (phylacteries) scriptures attached to their bodies to remind them of the Lord’s commandments. They knew the law as a whole but were not abiding by it. Jesus openly criticized these Pharisees and Scribes. They were trying to partake of the Lord’s table and the table of devils. “Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity,” (Matthew 23:27-28).
Therefore, a lukewarm Christian is unstable in all his ways and double minded (James 1:8). A lukewarm Christian may be full of doubt and unbelief.
Mark four, describes a lukewarm Christian as one in which the word of God has been sown among thorns (the deceitfulness of riches and cares of this world). “And these are they which are sown among thorns, such as hear the word, and the cares of this world and deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful,” (Mark 4:18-19).
How to avoid Lukewarmness?
We can avoid being lukewarm, by not only believing God’s word, but being doers of God’s word. We must have a renewed mind and a new heart. We can ask God daily in prayer to change our hearts and renew our minds in his word. Meditating in the word of God daily is key to renewing our minds and hearts. We must have a heart that is receptive to the word of God, where the word of God can grow and flourish without it being choked out. We must deny ourselves and take up our cross daily to avoid lukewarmness.
