Dante glanced around and replied, “Nah, probably just Bertha. She’s afraid of her own shadow.” He bit off a mouthful of his bread. “Last week, I saw her run away from a toad. She got the whole flock in a tizzy for nothin’!”
Talon laughed but continued to scan the flock. Another bleat drew his attention. It came from the farthest corner of the field, close to the woods. Several sheep in that area were now bleating, crowding together, and backing away from the fence.
Talon stood up, motioned with his staff, and then hopped over the fence. He tiptoed along the outside edge of the fence toward the woods. He didn’t see any sign of danger or anything unusual that would upset the sheep.
Dante grabbed his own staff and worked his way through the flock toward the bleating sheep. Concerned for both Talon and the sheep, he scanned the edge of the woods where Talon was heading. As he walked among the crowded, woolly flock, he continued to scan and noticed a glimmer in the shadows at the edge of the woods. He called out to Talon. “You see that?”
Talon scanned the edge of the woods. Seeing nothing, he spun around to look at Dante. “What? Where?”
Dante pointed. “Over there. It looks like eyes.”
Talon spun back toward the woods, raised his staff, and tried to appear large and threatening. Still not seeing what Dante had seen, he asked, “Where? Where do you see—”
A flash of legs and fur bolted out from the woods and sped toward Talon and the fence. The sheep, beginning with those nearest the fence, bleated and ran. Some jumbled up like cars in a traffic jam, while others broke away from the flock and scattered.
Dante, finding himself in the middle of the chaos, stumbled and dropped his staff. He steadied himself just in time to see a wolf leap into the pasture, heading straight toward a stray lamb. Dante looked at his staff. It was on the ground being trampled by panicking sheep. He looked at Talon, who was still on the other side of the fence. Feeling like he had no other options, Dante decided there was only one way to save the lamb. He zigged and zagged around the scattering sheep as he ran toward the wolf. Just as the wolf leapt toward the lamb, Dante leaped, knocking the wolf to the ground, and landing on top of it.
“Okay, boys, that’s enough adventuring for one day. It’s bedtime. Dante! Get off the dog. And pick up all those pillows,” said Mom, ruining yet another grand adventure.
