After Jesus feeds the five thousand men, besides women and children, in Galilee; the people of Galilee believed he was sent by God. They believed so much in him that they wanted to seize him and make him king. “When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said,” “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.” “Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself,” (John 6:14-15).
The people of Galilee were so hungry for the works of Jesus that when he escaped them they went looking for him. “When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there; nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him,” “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him,” (John 6:24-27).
“They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?” “Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent,” (John 6:28-29). “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty,” (John 6:35).
When Jesus said that he was that Bread of Life, the Jewish people that were following him began to question this fact. They began to complain. They became upset or angry at Jesus’ proclamation as the “Bread of Life.” The people were hungry desiring to be fed with physical bread and meat. But became angry when Jesus said they should desire to be fed with spiritual bread; which he was the spiritual bread they should seek to eat and partake of. “The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said,” “I am the bread which came down out of heaven.” “They said,” “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Jospeh, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say,” ‘I am come down out of heaven?’ “Therefore Jesus answered them,” “Don’t murmur among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day,” (John 6:41-44). “The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying,” “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” (John 6:52). To contend means to argue. People usually argue when they become upset or angry with something or someone.
Jesus tells them: “It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life. But there are some of you who don’t believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him. He said,” “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father. At this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him,” (John 6:63-66). Because of their wrong unbelief and wrong motives for following Jesus, some of them who had followed Jesus, stopped following him upon his proclamation as the Son of God, “The Bread of Life.”
We must not seek God because of miraculous signs or because of the benefits he can provide to us. We must seek God because of who he is; not because of what he can do for us. We must seek the heart of Christ. We must seek Christ for the sole purpose of developing an intimate, mature relationship with him. After all, he is our Heavenly Father and he has already promised to provide us, care for us, and protect us. We have no need to fear or doubt his goodness.
In the last days Zechariah prophesies of how the nations of the world will seek after Jesus or God. “Yes, many peoples and strong nations will come to seek Yahweh of Armies in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of Yahweh,” (Zechariah 8:22).
