Touch is one of our five senses. We use our five senses to observe, interact with, and communicate with the world around us. Our sense of touch can be a means of exploring and communicating with people, places, other living things, as well as abiotic factors (nonliving things) within our environment. Touch can be a means of showing affection, care, and love for another living thing. Married couples may hug, kiss, or hold hands to show their love and affection for one another. Likewise, parents may hug and kiss their children to show their care. People may also hug their grandparents, other relatives, close friends, and other people who may be of no relation.
According to providence care.com, “It has long been observed that people who receive hugs and cuddles from their spouses, children or even their pets live longer and recover from illness faster.” According to this site, “The chemical changes produced by hugging can be a powerful tool for deterring the effects of age-related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer.” The elderly can benefit a lot from touch in the form of hugs.
Touch is indeed a powerful sense. A mother’s touch can be so powerful that it can be healing especially for premature babies. Being skin to skin with their mothers can be a tremendous help and blessing for premature babies. “According to the World Health Organization (WHO) skin to skin contact (touch) between a mother and her premature baby can help the baby heal and grow.” “This practice is also known as “Kangaroo mother care.” “The WHO recommends that skin to skin contact should begin immediately after birth, without any initial period in an incubator.” According to Hello Motherhood’s website, “skin to skin human touch helps regulate the baby’s body temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate.”
Jesus and his disciples even used the power of touch. One touch from Jesus healed a man with Leprosy in Matthew chapter 8 verses 2-3. “A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord if you are willing, you can make me clean. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cured of his leprosy,” (Matthew 8: 2-3, NIV). Later on, in this same chapter Jesus heals another individual with the power of his touch (Just one touch). “When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in a bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him,” (Matthew 8: 14-15).
A touch from (holding) of the right hand from the Apostle Peter healed a certain man who had been lame from his mother’s womb. “Then Peter said, silver and gold have I none: but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he (Peter) took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple walking, and leaping, and praising God,” (Acts 3:6-8).
In Luke chapter 8 verses 43-47, is yet another example of the immediate power of touch (The woman with an issue of Blood). “And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched, And Jesus said, who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou who touched me? And Jeus said, Somebody hath touched me: For I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately,” (Luke 8: 43-47).
All these individuals were healed immediately (briskly), when they had physical contact with Jesus. They didn’t have to wait for their healing. Jesus still has that same power today. However, sometimes Jesus doesn’t choose to heal us immediately. In those times we must remain faithful to God knowing he loves us and has our best interests at heart.
