I awoke to a beautiful summer day. Birds singing their cheery melodies. Chipmunks and squirrels running to-and-fro in my backyard. Coffee made and breakfast served. I kissed my husband good-by as he left for work then I proceeded with my day.
The first thing I did when all was quiet and I was alone was have my quiet time. I sat with my Bible and my best Friend, Jesus. I am always amazed what God will tell me as I read through his word. Today was no different. “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord….Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them,” I read in Psalm 127:3, 5 (ESV). I had to smile to myself as I thought about our son bringing their dog over for us to ‘dog-sit’ while his family took a much anticipated trip to the shore. I loved this boy and was thankful God placed him in our lives. He was our tag-along child, arriving eight and a half years after our second son was born. God blessed us with three sons, filling our “quiver” with the best.
Shortly after noon, Doug came to the house with Gunnar in his arms. Gunnar is an adorable black mixed-breed pup who is always excited to see “grandma” and proved it by showering me with lots of kisses. Needless to say he was not sad to see his Master leave him behind. Only “grandma” gives him treats for no reason at all, and he knows this.
Because I love to sit on the patio, I took his yard leash outside to secure it so Gunnar could also enjoy the outdoors with me. I secured his leash and as I attempted to turn to come back into the house, I have no idea what happened next. One minute I’m standing looking at the leash, the next minute I found myself flying through the air, heading for the ground, which I hit hard.
What in the world did I trip over?
The wind was knocked out of me. When I came to, I checked to see if I had broken anything. No visible breaks. No blood appeared anywhere.
This was good. Right?
In most cases, yes this would be a good thing. But in this case I knew I was injured, perhaps seriously, as I had severe pain in my ribs and in my groin area. I managed to sit up, but the pain was so intense I wondered how I was going to get into the house. My husband was still at work. I was completely alone.
Well, except for the dog, but a lot of help he was. He obediently sat by the patio door watching the event unfold.
I scooted on my rump to the patio step and managed to sit on it. I had no idea how I was going to get turned around so I could stand, if I could stand, and get into the house then to my phone. As I sat on the step pondering the situation I said “Okay God. It’s you and me. You are going to have to do something here to help me get into the house. I don’t know if I can stand,” and with that God helped me turn myself around, kneel on the step and stand - painfully.
But I was standing.
God helped me go up two more steps into the house, then walk to the chair where my phone was.
I called my husband and fifteen minutes later he was home. After a trip to the ER, and several tests later, it was determined that I had bruised ribs on my left side and two broken bones in my left ramus bone, which is the pubic bone.
No wonder I had trouble walking!
I know God was with me as I tripped and fell. The verse from Psalm 37:24 proved to be true, "though (she) may stumble, (she) will not fall, for the Lord upholds (her) with his hand” (NIV).
Indeed, God’s big and mighty hand held me that July day and continues to hold me as I look forward to an eight-week recovery time.

This is the meat of the message. My suggestion is to trim out a lot of the superfluous information and focus more on the impact of the above truth. Develop the emotion, the confusion, the fear and ultimately, the PEACE of knowing God is ALWAYS with us. Also, start with a much stronger hook. This is a good story that could turn into great with a bit of tweaking.
Your sentences were will constructed, and easy to read with just enough tension to have the reader wonder- ‘what is coming next?’
Hope you’ve recovered from that ‘trip’.
