“MOTHER!”
“My goodness Ahiai, what has you so upset? Why all the shouting?” asked Phebe.
“Mother, something terrible has happened. I don’t know how it happened, but it did. Oh, Mother, what am I to do?” sobbed Ahiai.
“Tell me, daughter, what terrible thing has happened? What has you so upset? Maybe we can figure it out together.”
“Well,” Ahiai sobbed, “I was wearing my necklace of ten silver coins. My precious dowry which would be given to Asher on our wedding day. I was dancing in my room, practicing for the wedding dance we would soon enjoy. When I finished with my dance, I carefully took the necklace off, and laid it on my table. When I looked at it closely, I noticed one of the coins was missing. Missing!” wailed Ahiai. “Now what will I do?” Ahiai continued to cry uncontrollably at her loss.
Mother took the necklace and counted herself. One, two….eight, nine. Sure enough, the one in the middle was missing.
Mother put her arms around her daughter and lovingly said, “We are going to search until we find your coin. We will ask our neighbors to pray as we search. Now, go find a lamp and light it so we can see better.”
Ahiai hurried off to do just that. She returned with the largest lamp she could find, lit it, and the two began searching every nook-and-cranny of their small living space. They looked under furniture. Shook every rug. They crawled on their hands and knees so they would be sure to cover every square inch on the floor.
Their intense search revealed nothing. No coin was to be found.
Ahiai continued to sob, “Mother, we have to find the coin. We have worked so hard to provide this dowry, I need to find the coin. How can I present Tobias with nine silver coins when I promised him ten?”
“Ahiah, go get the broom. We will sweep the house. Perhaps the coin is stuck in a crack but our sweeping will unlatch it. The coin has to be here somewhere.”
Not only did Ahiah bring one broom, she managed to find two. Both she and her mother swept the house - twice. They swept under furniture. Swept every corner carefully - twice. At the end of their sweeping they had a very clean house, but did not find the lost coin.
Ahiah sat at the table, head in her hands, continuing to sob. “Mother, we have to find the coin.”
She got up from the table and went to her room to get the necklace. Again she counted the coins, thinking perhaps she counted wrong. She had not. Nine silver coins sparkled back at Ahiah.
Mother wept along with her daughter. “We will figure something out,” Phebe said.
Ahiah reached into her apron pocket to retrieve a handkerchief to wipe away her tears. Her hand touched something smooth and round. She grasped it in her hand and whispered to her mother, “I think I may have found my coin.”
She withdrew her hand, opened it, and there, lying in her palm, was a shiny, silver coin.
“Mother! I found it. I found my coin.”
Mother and daughter grasped hands and were laughing, crying and dancing around the room as they rejoiced over the found coin.
Ahiah ran from the house and called to all her neighbors, “Rejoice with me. I have found my coin!”
Neighbors, one-by-one came out to greet Ahiah. They rejoiced in her happiness at finding this precious coin. Now she had a complete silver necklace to give to her husband as her dowry on her wedding day. She would be able to dance with joy and gladness as she and Tobias celebrated their wedding.
“Listen neighbors! You are all invited to our special day” Ahiah shouted. “You prayed I would find my coin, and I did. I want you to celebrate our wedding day with us, for that which was lost was found, and you were a part of the find.”
Sinners are like this lost coin. God will go to any extent to find the lost and bring them home. He wants no one to perish. If this woman was able to rejoice over finding a simple lost coin, if her neighbors could rejoice along with her, think of how much rejoicing there is in heaven when one sinner finds his way back to the Father again.
We are worth more than ten silver coins.
