The next miracle was that Derek took his friend’s advice and went to see a doctor. The doctor suspected diabetes, and put him on medication to bring down his sugars.
Then Derek turned orange, all over. His friend at work told him to go back to the doctor, and he did! That definitely qualifies as a miracle.
Next, he lost thirty pounds in one month without changing his diet or exercise. I wished I could take his sufferings on my own body. I have gained over a hundred pounds since I have had Parkinson’s. All of my meds have the opposite side effect on me. Miracle of great proportions: he went back to the doctor again! The doctor on duty at the walk-in clinic was very concerned and stepped up the schedule for tests.
From the vantage point of hindsight, we can clearly see the footprints of God all through this ordeal, but I couldn’t see the path of miracles just yet. It got pretty dark for me next, and a bit eerie.
Derek had an appointment in the city to have a surgical biopsy. Since he would have to stay in the hospital overnight, and I am not able to drive anymore, we had planned for both of our adult daughters to come along so that one of them could drive home. For some reason I wanted my sister to be there too. Debbie is my only sibling, and sixteen months older. Our parents have both died of cancer, so she is my only family.
The surgeon doing Derek’s biopsy turned out to be the same doctor who did my dad’s surgery for pancreatic cancer about three years previously. It was eerie to be in the same waiting room with Debbie, and have the doctor come out of the OR to tell me that my husband most likely had pancreatic cancer. The same cancer that Dad died from!
Pancreatic cancer is a nasty diagnosis. 95% of its victims do not survive. Thank God my sister was with me in that waiting room, because I have no idea how I walked out of the hospital.
I confess: I prayed for a miracle, but didn’t really trust God to deliver. Derek had such a positive outlook. He had the same radical surgery that kept my dad in the hospital for a month. Derek was up and walking after two days! His post-surgical hospital stay was only one week. A month later he was back to his job as a semi-truck driver, and within a couple of months he was able to work on the dock as well; slinging freight, loading trailers, and driving the fork lift.
In April of this year, Derek had a CT scan, and there was no sign of cancer! What a difference one year makes!
