Leo could see the plethora of demons and students walking the “Mall” of the U of A campus on the warm September afternoon. It was not uncommon for so many demons to be present on a university campus, it was prime hunting ground for the demons, but there did seem to be a buildup. “What are you up to Captain?” Leo asked himself as he searched for any clue.
Judy sat under a palm tree, one of the coveted shaded areas on the “Mall,” with her laptop open studying for her Psych test. Her demon Julius, a low level “Whittler,” so called because they whittled away at a Christians faith with constant demented thoughts and suggestions, kept looking over his shoulder at the Captain who stood twenty feet behind and to the right of him.
“What are you planning?” Leo asked himself as he walked inconspicuously through the crowded “Mall.” Leo knew Captain Cornelius’ presence meant that an event was going to occur, but he could not see what it was. He grew more and more frustrated. “Lord please help me to see.” Leo momentarily closed his eyes and prayed for guidance.
“I Peter 5:8” the voice of his dead father suddenly rang through Leo’s head. Leo quickly sat down under a palm tree which was a hundred yards away from, and facing Judy and Captain Cornelius. Instinctively Leo allowed himself to slip into a lucid state in order to recall the ten-year-old memory that had filled his heart.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,” a young, fifteen-year-old Leo recited the verse as he looked up at his father from the forest floor.
“Faire attention” Leo’s father barked in his native French, “Le demons are très sneaky“ His father motioned for Leo to pick up his sword. “A Templar Knight must think deux et trois steps ahead of the demons.” He pointed at the rabbit hiding in the brush. “Did you notice the rabbit before or after your demon made it draw your attention away from my sword?
“After,” Leo hung his head low because he had disappointed his father, “Sorry Papa.”
“C’est bon Leo” he wrapped his arms around his son, “Now recite I Peter 5:8 again; en garde.”
“Merci Papa, Merci my Lord” he whispered to himself as he came out of his lucid dream state, “Look two and three steps ahead”
In the far west corner of the “Mall” Leo noticed a gathering of students shouting and carrying signs beginning to walk towards them in the middle of the “Mall.” “The rabbit!” Leo thought as he looked around for who Captain Cornelius wanted distracted. Judy had not heard the students yet, but Cornelius grinned as he watched the loud procession moving slowly towards him.
“The police officers” Leo thought as the Captain unwittingly had tipped his hand and signaled for his cohorts to draw the three bicycle cops attention towards the crowd of students on the other end of the “Mall.”
Leo jumped to his feet and started shouting, “Officers, Officers,” drawing their attention back to him. He had about ten seconds to figure out Cornelius’ end game; he hoped that what they said about Cornelius was true and his legendary impatience would reveal itself and Leo’s rabbit might force the Captain’s hand.
Out of the corner of his eye Leo watched as the Captain turned towards the white cargo van immediately behind him; he was yelling and motioning for his soldiers to hurry up; Leo assumed it was to begin the event.
“Officers I saw some men dressed in black trench coats get into that van!” Leo frantically screamed not knowing who or what was in the van.
As the officers surrounded the van two students with guns burst through the doors. They were immediately subdued and taken into custody. Leo starred right at the furious Captain, grinned and saluted him letting him know that his evil plans had been thwarted by a Templar Knight.
