Suddenly she heard murmuring ahead as the servants hung out the window. “There he is, oh my, they were telling the truth. He is dancing and just look at his smile.”
“What are you doing?”
At the sharp sound of her voice, everyone jumped, immediately fell in reverence. No one spoke, but they knew she was not going to like what she saw. Walking to the window, Michal looked out and saw why the servants were so excited.
There in the street, dancing like a fool was David. 'Idiot! Doesn’t he know how ridiculous he looks prancing around like that? Oh my god! He has stripped down next to nothing.'
“Get back to work, NOW!” Just a few words spoken through gritted teeth, but they sent servants and slaves like scattering in all directions.
‘Why? ‘Why did he do that? Doesn’t he understand who he is?’ She cautiously leaned out the window watching the hideous display below. Similar thoughts ran through her mind as she pulled back inside the walls. She did not want anyone to think she approved of his actions. ‘This is absolutely ridiculous!’
Born into royalty as a princess, she knew her place and position strutting around like a royal peacock, knowing she was the most beautiful women in her tiny nation. The servants, slaves and the commoners bowed before her as she passed them by. She paraded everywhere with her head held high. After all, she was the queen. Pride filled her heart flowing through her veins as her very lifeline. She had long faced her role in her nation. ‘How could he do this? I am so embarrassed.’
Standing in the door, knowing he would arrive within seconds, she stood waiting. This last action was the final straw. He had to realize how this made him look. The people were laughing behind his back. His was a position of pride and prestige, no other king would strip down and dance like a common street entertainer. David walked in carrying his cloak, his heart rejoicing and still dancing as Jehovah’s joy overflowed. At least it did, until he saw her face.
“Get out! All of you get out!” Her face contorted in rage.
“Explain to me why you did this? Why would a king strip down for everyone to see and talk about?” She ranted and raved spewing out every vicious word she could get away with. Minutes later, she saw a glint in David’s eye and knew the barrage had it the mark. She clamped her lips together knowing she might be queen but David was still king over everyone. Even though she knew he was the ruler, it chaffed her spirit. After all, she was King Saul’s daughter. After Saul’s death and her brother Jonathan, she should have been made queen. She had the brains for it and yet here she stood before her king, the idiot who stripped before the whole world.
Thinking to outsmart David, she rapidly changed her tone and began trying to placate him. “My King, my only desire what is best for you and your kingdom. You are the king and we need to present a certain air of royalty before your people.”
“This was not about the people, Michal!”
“Then why…”
Before she completed the sentence, David raised his hand.
“Enough! What I did was unto Jehovah! He has allowed the Ark of the Covenant to once more come back to us. How can you not rejoice over that?”
“Well, I am happy, of course, but still you put yourself out there like a common…”
“A common what, Michal? Be careful what you say next, wife of mine! I have only brought honor to my Lord and if you cannot see that, I feel sorry for you.”
Piecing her lips together, she managed to drop her head before David could see the hatred in her eyes. Slowly, she turned and walked away seething in anger at the embarrassment.
Years later, proudly Michal walked the same halls. Her head still held high and her hips softly swaying revealing her shapely body. 'I am so glad I never had to bear his children. It would have ruined my figure and beauty.' Haughtily she continued down the hall.
