Topic: Think (09/02/10)
“Think, think, think,” Winnie the Pooh utters as he hits his head. Pooh needs his brain engaged in order to capture Piglet from flying away in the Blustery Day, or simply to remember where he left his honey.

“If I only had a brain,” Scarecrow sings. He ventures on a quest for a brain in the Wizard of Oz, pondering all the possibilities he can accomplish once endowed with the gift of a thinking tool.

“I think I can. I think I can. I think I can,” the Little Engine That Could chants on the steep hill. He chugs hope into every repeated proclamation.

These three classic children’s fiction characters live and breathe through me. The Scarecrow surfaces most often, particularly while driving. If a driver pulls into traffic without looking, or something equally stu…um…thoughtless, I sing to them, “If you only had a brain.”

I occasionally hit my head and utter, “think, think, think,” while trying to remember where I set down my cup of coffee, or any item that relocates without asking permission. My glasses have a nasty habit of jumping on top of my head, playing hide and seek in my hair.

In writer mode, the Little Engine surfaces frequently as I stare at the blank computer screen. I have to remind myself to develop the tenacity of the determined train; my thoughts usually veer off track. “I think I can. I think I can. What was I thinking? I can’t do this! Well, maybe I can’t, but with God all things are possible. He thinks I can. I think I can…”

I haven’t figured out why my brain rebels. “Avoid clichés,” I think. “Okay. I’ll put my thinking cap on and get right on that.”

I think too much and want to find the off switch. Other times, I can’t conjure up a fresh thought and rely on caffeine to activate thought-flow. Thinking can be overrated. What do you think?

I think this was unique and I liked how you explained the application of the children's classic sayings in your life. When writing, I also revert to the "I think I can" motto while staring at a blank screen.

Such a cute idea! Could identify with the glasses in the hair and will try to remember to sing the next time a driver is so deserving! Well-written!

This was very "easy" reading and I enjoyed it. I especially liked your telling of how you sing the Wizard of Oz songs to bad drivers. I'll have to remember to do that since my children now gleefully refer to other motorists as "morons," having heard me do the same many times over.
