“A penny for your thoughts,” she said. “They’re not worth a penny.”
“Is that because they’re bad or that you haven’t any?”
“In a single moment it could be one or the other,
So to share them with you, I simply will not bother.”
“Friend, if they are wrong, you really need to let them go.
If no thoughts are in your head, there is much that you don’t know.
If your mind is empty with no thinking going on
I feel sorry for you and I won’t linger long.
For my brain is working busily and the wheels always turn
From one reflection to the next – another thing to learn.
It seems plain ‘common sense’ to me to always think things through.
Not reasoning in one’s mind is completely strange and new.”
She soon met another friend and asked, “How are you today?”
The friend replied, “I have a headache that will not go away.
I cannot focus for a moment on what to say or do,
So I must run along now. Good day to you.”
Joyously throughout the day, she praised God above
“Lord, we all need to consider your undying love.
Many folks these days don’t seem to understand
Or ponder on the gifts for us, you hold within your hand.
You bless our lives with sound minds so we can think and grow,
Yet too often in using them, we are much too slow.
We cram them full of worldly, foolish thoughts and whims
Causing our love for you eventually to grow dim.
Help me on my journey, Lord, to yield my thoughts to you.
Help me ne’er to forget, my mind you will renew.
Teach me to reflect on that which would cause me not to stray.
And please, give me your good thoughts to guide me on my way.
If perchance, one should say to me, “A penny for your thoughts,”
Let me not be addle brained and feel like I’ve been caught
Without one word to share, to bring honor to my Lord.
Cause me to answer truthfully, “My thoughts are worth much more.”
