She wasn’t supposed to be homeless, yet she’d been on and off the streets for the past two years. She’d been to college and gotten a master’s degree. She’d traveled to interesting places. Her first job after college had so much promise. She was happy there until that argument with the boss that cost her the job. It wasn’t fair; she had been right. After that, nothing seemed to work out for very long.
She rinsed her mouth and went to the bench to settle in for the night. She pulled out of her bag a light blanket and lay down. She wished she had something to read. There was enough light from the streetlight.
She rummaged through her bag. Maybe there was something in there. She pulled out a thin blue booklet. Terri thought it was funny that she’d managed to hold onto her passport. Most people lost their valuables or got mugged for them. She looked over the pages looking at the stamps for arrivals and departures. France, England, Germany, Japan.
“No, this was never supposed to have happened to me. There must be a way out.” She’d begun to accept that she was stuck, but the thought of a way out came back to her time and time again.
She put the passport back into her bag and went to sleep.
………….
She woke up with the sun the next morning. Time for breakfast. She stuffed the blanket back in the bag and went to breakfast.
She was used to the way people held their breath when she came near, and it almost didn’t bother her when the girl at the counter made that face as she ordered her Egg McMuffin.
She took a table and went to work on her meal. She was so grateful for every mouthful that even the sumptuous dinners in Paris couldn’t compare with this feast.
She glanced over to the next table as the young man in his business suit hastily got up and rushed out the door. A small dark blue book fell out of his briefcase as he tucked his newspaper under his arm.
She bent to pick it up. A New Testament. She’d never been a religious person despite her mother’s efforts, but a book was such a luxury. She tucked it into her bag. At least she’d have something to read under the lamp post tonight.
