TITLE: The Cycle of Life | Previous Challenge Entry

The first time I met cousin Ray.
A bouncing boy on Auntie’s knee
Brought without a doubt such glee!
With hair of red and eyes of blue
Deeply imbedded dimples,too.
And ears too large on either side
A nose that seemed a bit too wide.
I was just a girl of three
The day Ray bounced on Auntie’s knee.
So funny looking, cousin Ray
At least he was to me that day.
Then Ray began to play and run
And chased me through the summer sun.
A nuisance, yes, at times I ran
Away from mischief he had planned.
Always a prankster, cousin Ray
He loved to tease me every day.
But he would do it with such charm
I’d fall for it without alarm.
The apple with the little worm
Given in love, it made me squirm!
A jar of spiders in my bed
I slept upon the floor instead.
He loved to pull my ponytail
Then run and hide as I would wail.
He’d give a glass of lemonade
No sugar added, I’m afraid.
This boy was such a childhood pest
Putting me through every test.
Would ever he begin to grow
And stop the jokes, I did not know.
But time, as it most surely will
Began to pass, so quiet and still.
Gone for good each summer day
Of fun and frolic with cousin Ray.
Now both married, with children too
Remembering things we used to do.
No more frolic, no more play
A serious tone for every day.
Oh, but what is this I see?
I have a little girl of three.
And cousin Ray a bouncing boy
Upon his knee, bringing such joy!
My little girl meets cousin Ray
A new cycle of life begins this day.
With hair of red and eyes of blue
Deeply imbedded dimples,too.
Ears seem too large on either side
A nose that looks a bit too wide.
Ray Junior and my daughter too
Our seeds of promise through and through.
We’ll watch them as they too will grow
And the fun and laughter they will know.
And when their childhood does end
God’s cycle of life will on them depend.
Our Father is watching us from above
As we discover the beauty of abiding in love.
And we fulfill the cycle of life He bestowed
As our families continue to blossom and grow!
