I was overjoyed when he took the day off work and drove two and half hours to meet me for lunch. It had been several years since we had seen each other. Over lunch, we caught up on what was going on in our lives with our spouses and children, and how time had passed so quickly.
Afterwards, we decided to take a trip down memory lane. We started by visiting the small house our grandmother lived in when we were young. It was located in the downtown area and had been converted into a photography store. The store happened to be closed, so we peeked in the front window of the old house. Everything remained the same with the exception of the photography equipment that had replaced grandma’s overstuffed sofa and rocking chair. We walked around to the back of the house and found the back yard unchanged. It was as if time stood still. We both suddenly got the most eerie feeling that if we knocked on the door, grandma would have answered.
We then decided to drive up to the cemetery to visit grandma and our most precious aunt. We sat under a tree that shaded our loved one’s grave and reflected on the difficult lives our parents went through as children, being raised by a single mother in the 1930’s. As we shared stories that had been passed down to us by our own parents, we were left with the realization that there were many secrets buried with our aunt and grandmother that would never be told.
When we said our goodbyes later that afternoon, my cousin and I recognized the bond we have that no one else in the family shares. Through our childhood and beyond, it has only become stronger. We said our goodbyes with the promise of not letting so much time slip away before we got together again.
We still don’t see each other very often, but I know when I start to think about him, I'm on his mind too. Inevitably when I pick the phone and call, he always says, "I was just thinking about you."
