your arm around me
drew the realization of my anxiety
to my thoughts.
You seem to float
on these troubled waters.
I bow my head and swallow the turmoil,
overwhelmed by these events
as you squeeze a hug
and go -
drifting away from me...
I don't expect you to understand my squall,
as I don't understand your buoyancy,
but after this hurricane,
maybe we will find
our bridge
of love
still stands among the wreckage.
This sweet connection
fate could not prevent
now runs deeper still -
ingrained admiration
perceptible strength
individual developing
into full lives -
I marvel and breathe deep
of you
as you of me
as we smile jointly
in this new stage
of free.
This sweetened avenue,
connecting us both – we have nutured,
have guarded -
late at night we stand, watching over our Bridge -
as life is the river sweeping under us,
drinking and talking
(sometimes I have been inconsolable) as we watch
and commune over wine.
The games we played – ungame, scruples,CSI,
the meals we had – roast chicken,
laughing we tossed our time into the river
as we hang out together..
but now a different tide is coming
the river is darkened with the stench of blood,
signs of limb-cutting disconnection,
the putrid water arriving
unheeded by you...
I have written to dad - and I know the consequences are coming,
drifting from him to you...down our river
under our Bridge
If you turn away from me
I have already decided to stay,
to watch over this sweetened avenue
even if you have gone...
...in the hope that one day,
when the river has dulled to diluted pink,
you may return
to laugh again
with me.
