Each of the executives sat around the massive cherry wood conference table and simply stared. Their focus was not on spreadsheets, bright ideas, or new initiatives. No, the MBA’s around the room were of no use at the moment. Only open hearts and serving souls had the floor as the CEO of one of the largest restaurant chains in the world knelt before his vice president with a towel and a basin of water. Apparently unaware of the meeting’s agenda, the VP’s eyes grew wide and then swam when his shoes and socks were removed by his boss and friend of more than a decade. Protests began, but then were silenced when eyes met and unspoken words explained what no one else could know. The process continued. As each foot was washed and then patted dry, no breath, cough, or sputter could be heard among the twelve suits who continued to watch intently. Then, slowly their leader stood and walked to the head of the table. He placed the towel and basin of water on the floor beside him; the suit jacket was slipped back on and everyone took a collective breath. The lights dimmed and the screen lit up behind him. In huge letters it read, Great Leaders Serve.
