Silence flowers as the sound of weight placed on a leather chair fades;
the settled, but faint smell of books and old wood primes the windowless, little office and triggers memories.
he adjusts his tie, fidgets, and places his hands flat on the desktop (activating purpose – palms to hardness)and bows his head in prayer.
marks in the desk peek through cheap, wax build-up, and nicks on the long, antique edges draw recall --
firm warnings to respect the small, useful space, or play elsewhere(but not in the sanctuary).
he searches the bookshelves, studies knick knacks peppered here and there,
and finally glances down at his watch –the motion bunching his suit jacket around his elbow and forearm, balancing liberation and nerves.
The hallway is a portal, then a bridge.
the loose turn of a doorknob, and the opening of a door reveal a forest of faces(chatter floating about like instruments in tune-up).
and from the front pew to back are living radar blips,lives he may strengthen, sway or disappoint.
the trial begins …
