The saddest example of this is when I went to a church service in Washington DC on Easter Sunday. The minister decided it was his place to talk about politics while at the pulpit. What's worse, he used the Bible to back his stance. Surely there are more important, more relevant things to talk about on Easter Sunday right?
Unfortunately, this type of preaching takes place all over the country. The pulpit is no place for politics, it is a place for praise and spiritual lessons (key word: spiritual).
All-in-all, there is an immense power of the pulpit, and the responsibility of ethical use falls on the shoulders of our spiritual leaders. I urge any of you who attend a politically preaching pulpit to re-asses what it is you want to get out of faith.
Spirituality is the key. God speaks to the spirit, not the (political) institutions of man. The pulpit is a tool to help guide you to a place of spiritual awareness.
I definately understand how hard this can be, especially given our current political situation. Nonetheless, it is essential to keep politics out of the pulpit.
I sincerely hope that I will never encounter a situation like I did at the Nation's capital. It really can leave a bad taste in your mouth, and frankly, it discredits religion.
