Don't be surprised when God answers your prayers.
On second thought, go ahead and be surprised. I think God likes that. There is a certain amount of pleasure that a giver gets in the surprise of his receiver.
I have a boring story to tell about the time that I gave my wife an astounding gift. It was astounding because ever since she was a little girl, she wanted a "Chatty Cathy Doll". These things are really hard to find. For the uninformed, this doll is about three feet tall and when you pull a string on it's neck, it says stuff. She never got that doll as a girl. Her father tried to compensate for it by giving her a doll that did other things but that was never enough. One Christmas a few years ago I decided that old "Chatty" and I were going to have a showdown. If there was one of these dolls left in the world, my bride was going to have it. I'll spare you the details. Suffice it to say that I found one but it was faulty. When you pulled the string, it just said "ERERERERET"!
I bought the doll anyway. On Christmas morning we all sat around opening presents. We saved her box for last. As she dug in I could see the mounting excitement as styrofoam peanuts went flying, followed by an ecstatic squeal as she (my wife) lifted Chatty out of the box. And then she cried with happiness. She was a bit disappointed that Chatty couldn't talk but she loved that doll. Still has it. And I was thrilled that she was so pleased.
I think that God is like that. He wants to give us good gifts and He is thrilled when we are surprised, even when the gifts that He gives us are not what we expected.
By now you may be asking "What's the Point?"
Get excited about God's gifts. Be grateful and gracious. Allow yourself to be surprised and delighted at every sunrise and moonglow. Did you know that Jesus got up very early in the morning and went out onto a mountainside to pray?
And by the way, when I finish this article I'm going back into google and see if I can find another Chatty Cathy who can actually speak. Christmas is coming up again. I think my beloved would be surprised.
I'll bet God's going to do something like that for you.
