When I was a little girl I met a very strange and charming man.
He married my mother but I had a crush on him.
At ten years old I tried to express that to him and my mom got jealous...I could'nt figure it out.
My new dad set me straight. He took me alongside and said, "I am the father, your mom is the mother and you are the daughter." He made it as clear as crystal what my role was.
Not many things in my life have ever been as clear.
At sixteen years old I fell for a soldier. He reminded me a lot of dad. I ran off to marry him while dad was in Beirut.
Dad was a Marine.
It ended in divorce even though dad thought a lot of the guy. I was unhinged.
I married my next husband without much input from either of my parents. He was a hippie and unfortunately, he beat me. When I finally had the nerve to tell dad, I had to plead with him not to come and take the guy apart. That's the only part of that whole bewildering relationship that I remember clearly. Everything else is a fog.
Now I am married to an Army Corpsman. We are having a lot of trouble because I don't think that I love him. I'm befuddled. He seems like a nice guy but to be honest he can be a real handfull. Dad has met him and he likes him well enough but dad has liked two of the three that I've married too.
I don't want to go through life like this. I want to be happy.
I want someone like dad.
I know that I have dad because we talk almost every day, but I can't "have" dad. I know that it sounds silly but I wonder if there are any more men out there like him. I've tried all the different venues and I can't find anyone who fits the bill.
Where are the men who will stand in the gap for their wives... who'll take out the garbage and still find the time to help the kids with their math? Is there any man left who doesn't mind changing diapers?...Who actually LIKES it? and when they're done with that, can still make mom feel special and loved?
You'd love my dad.

Good job.
After that, it's very real, and very open. Heart touching, as well.
