An Art Definition: Any of various disciplines that do not rely exclusively on the scientific method; a practical skill
Some people are gifted with the art of words flowing so eloquently from their mouths expressing what is in their hearts. The deaf use their hands to relay their thoughts, and it flows freely through their fingers. There are others who have been blessed with the essence of the spirit of the heart traveling north to the brain where it is processed into words, and ascends south to the hand. The words are then transferred from the fingers onto a form of material by a writing implement to be interpreted by one who has a deciphering ability. This particular art is called writing.
Writing is God’s gift to man. Like anything He has given to us, it can be used for good or evil. Our tongue can be like a fire not tamed bringing evil and destruction, or it can be like apples of gold in a setting of silver bringing us peace and joy. It has the effect of bringing life or death, a blessing or a curse.
Writing can paint pictures in our minds using the element of word pictures. The picture can be frightening or calming, alarming or confirming, inspiring or depressing, as the author dictates. Writing can captivate or repulse you, it can intrigue or bore you, and it can build bridges, or cause one to burn bridges.
Writing as a subject can be as difficult as calculus to an untrained math mind, or an art major immersed into a physics class; or it can be a joy to an English professor in creating and giving assignments to his word hungry English students eager to share what is in their hearts and on their minds.
Writing is such a powerful form of communication that, unlike words spoken, can be retrieved, torn up, shredded, burned, or saved and treasured in a safe, or in our hearts. However, like the spoken word, it is an art that can produce a lasting effect.
Contrary to the evolutionary belief of human beings creating their own language, the gift of words, communication through writing came from God, and it is not our own invention. Evidence of this was written for us to learn as recorded in the story of the Tower of Babel. But the greatest evidence we have are the words written down in John 1:1 (NIV) “In the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God.” The Word was made flesh and made his dwelling among us,” says John in John 1:14. (NIV) We would not have record of these lifesaving words had someone not put it in writing for us. It is written down for all posterity, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away,” says Jesus in Luke 21:33. (NIV)
How about using the art of writing to write down what God has done in and through you for future generations? I guarantee it will be the greatest Valentine ever given to them.

I'd encourage you to avoid beginning an essay with a definition, and to stretch yourself to find new ways to express familiar concepts.
The encouragement at the end is greatly appreciated.
