The nested mixing bowls I inherited from my husband’s grandmother are always the perfect size. They are painted with crisscrossed golden and brown streaks that clash with the black and red of my modern kitchen, but I love them anyway.
The simple mixing of the dry ingredients, the peeling of the apple, the cracking of the egg, are a rhythm I am familiar with. I know that the house will soon be filled with a warm sweet scent. All of the failures of the week before are folded into the past, the challenges of the new week are small, manageable.
The muffins rise in the oven, their crowns peeking over the top of the pan, golden and perfect.
So many times, we equate purpose with productivity. It seems of utmost importance to be useful, to be busy, to be efficient. I think God calls us to something different. In order to set my heart on things above, I need to pay attention to the motives of my own heart. I need to slow down long enough to ask for forgiveness and a new start. In other words, I need to make muffins.

This is a wonderful devotional... light, but definitely something to 'chew on'... pun intended.
