“I can’t do this, it’s too hard,” said Jacob, Joseph’s second born son.
“Let me help you.”
Joseph looked over his shoulder to watch the two without them knowing. Yeshua had placed his hand over Jacob’s, “Try it at this angle,” he said in a patient tone.
Within minutes, Jacob shook his head, “I’m tired of this. I think I’ll go read.”
Joseph suppressed a chuckle as Jacob scurried past him and out the door toward their cottage next door. Jacob was not known for patience when it came to doing things with his hands, but if he was given a scroll to read, it would keep him occupied for hours.
He walked over to Yeshua and put his hand on his son’s shoulder. “It isn’t easy teaching someone else the craft of woodworking, but you are a natural teacher.”
“Was I difficult to teach, Abba?” Yeshua asked.
“No, but you had an unfair advantage—” Joseph paused. He still found it hard to comprehend, after fourteen years, that Almighty God had entrusted him, a carpenter, with the raising of His son…the long-awaited Messiah. “You were creating long before this world existed. I have much to learn from you,” Joseph’s voice trailed off.
Yeshua went over to the corner of the room, and brought back a wooden box, holding it for Joseph to see. Joseph ran his hand along the smooth edges of the cedar chest. The fragrance of the wood filled his senses. “You have done a beautiful job on this. Your Ima will be pleased.”
Yeshua smiled. “I want this to be something special for her.” He put the box on the end of his own workbench, before he lifted the lid off the chest and placed it on the wooden work surface. One date palm had already been carved on the right of the top side of the lid, with its palms curving left toward the center. The start of the trunk of another tree on the left side was also seen with a curve to the right.
Joseph ran his fingers along the grooves of the carvings. Such fine details brought the images to life. He knew the foliage of the two trees would meet in the middle. The work was that of a mature craftsman, not a teenage boy. The youth beside him had created galaxies, stars, and even the trees that the wood they used came from. The bigness of God, confined in a human body, for the purpose of bringing mankind back into relationship with Almighty God.
Joseph knew that no matter how skilled any one became at their craft, their abilities were limited, as there was only one true Master Craftsman.
