Called to Honor

What does it mean to honor? To show honor means to show a high level of respect, loyalty, and gratitude toward someone. There are many ways we can show honor toward others. We are called by God to show honor toward him and other people. The Bible specifically tells us to honor God, honor our parents, honor our spouses, honor our elders, honor our leaders and other people.

How to Show Honor Toward God?

We can show honor toward God through our loyalty, obedience, and respect to his word, by seeking and putting him first, through our worship/praise, and through our show of gratitude toward him. A call to honor is a call to holiness before Christ, our Lord and Savior. A call to honor is a call to praising the name of the Lord, remembering his goodness, and his everlasting mercy and forgiveness toward us. “The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just. Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness,” (Isaiah 26: 7-9).

The first and most important way we honor God is through loyalty, obedience, and respect. We show our honor toward God by being loyal to him and by putting no other gods or things above him in our lives. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” (Exodus 20:3). “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment,” (Matthew 22: 37-38). “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain;” (Exodus 20:7). We are called and commanded to not only honor God as our creator and savior but to honor his name as well. There is power in the name of Jesus. We fully depend on God for all our needs.

A second way we can show honor toward God ties into the first; it is by living a holy life. We are called as born again believers to live a holy life with Jesus Christ, being our chief example to follow. “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy,” (I Peter 1:16). We achieve holiness through grace, faith and obedience to God’s laws and commands. “Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just and good,” (Romans 7:12). “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life,” (Romans 6:22). We honor God by being holy in both mind and body. “I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service, And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God,” (Romans 12: 1-2). “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you, should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;” (I Thessalonians 4:3-4). “For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness,” (I Thessalonians 4:7).

How Do We Honor Others?

We honor one another by loving others as we love ourselves. “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,” (Matthew 22:39). We are specifically called to honor our mother and father (Exodus 20: 12), our spouses (I Peter 3:1-6, I Peter 3: 7), our elders (I Peter 5:5), our leaders, (I Thessalonians 5: 12-13), and other people (Colossians 3:12-14).

“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness,” (Colossians 3: 12-14).

A life of honor is a life of love and service to God and others.
