Rabbi Yosef, in the rabbinical community is known for his literary work Beis Halevi, the scholarly writing on the study of Torah. He was very devoted to teaching Torah, the Old Testament and Hebrew to his young students. As you might have guessed his ancestry was from as long line of rabbis from the tribe of Levi. He served as rabbi to the Jewish people that settled in Brisk and taught in yeshiva, a school for Jewish children.
His son Chaim was born in 1853. As time passed Chaim followed in his father's footsteps and became known as the Rabbi of Brisk. What impressed me the most about the Soloveitchik family was their acts of kindness?
Rabbi Chaim was quoted saying while he responded to people's needs his father went a little further to discover what their needs were. The people of Brisk were impoverished and Rabbi Josef arranged to feed his students daily.
Rabbi Chaim taught yeshiva, school in his own home. Students came from all over Europe to study. His home became open to anyone who wanted to learn. Even little babies were brought to his home. Remember, this was a time of great poverty and when a family couldn't take care of their little one they knew the Rabbi and his family would.
He is known for his analytic method of studying Talmud called the Brisker Method. His primary work was titled Chidushei Rav Chaim, a volume of insights that focuses on precise definitions that categorizes Jewish law. He had three sons and their descendants also followed in his footsteps.
Today Brisk represents several yeshivas started by Rabbi Chaim's descendants in the U.S. and Israel.
