I raced upstairs in a panic and announced what I had just witnessed to my son, Benjamin, who was sitting at the kitchen table studying his coffee and his laptop.
“Was it a mouse?”
“No. It was too big to be a mouse!”
“Was it a squirrel?”
“No. It was too small to be a squirrel!”
“Well what was it?”
“I don’t know!”
Completely disinterested, he went back to his laptop. “Just wait for Jack to wake up…he’ll get it.”

Jack is one of my more “outdoorsy” sons, but I didn’t wait for him to wake up. I frantically stormed into his room and told him of this emergency. He didn’t share in my sense of urgency either, but now I had woken up both Jack and his brother and roommate AJ, and they both agreed to be down in a minute.

We went through the whole “what was it?” line of questioning again, and the two of them gathered their equipment including a BB gun, a flashlight and a broom. They put on hiking boots and descended to the basement (actually more like a cellar) where they began banging on walls trying to scare whatever it was from its hiding place.

Thus began an entire day of hide and seek. But it was COVID, all five boys were again living at home (much to my delight, but not necessarily theirs) and we were all getting a bit bored. After calling the exterminator, who came masked up, but produced no results, AJ and Jack were more determined than ever to catch this moving target. They had now determined it was a baby bunny with a glue board attached to its rear. They set up more such glue boards at all foreseeable exit points and waited.

At 5:30, after spending much of the day taking turns checking their “traps”, AJ yelled “Bingo!” from below. He and Jack put on heavy duty gardening gloves and took the terrified bunny, now with two glue boards attached to its shaking little body, outside. They gently poured oil on all points of attachment until the lucky bunny was free.

Benjamin was still sitting at his laptop.
