Mama demonstrated love for us when she refused the days’ work because her employers did not want us within the working environment. Although she wanted the money, she left that opportunity.
Within the home she showed her love in very practical ways so that we could appreciate what she was doing for us. For example, each of us had a day in the week where she prepared our preferred dinner. This could be Chicken, Pig’s tail Stew Peas and Rice, Fried Fish and Rice and Peas, or Curried Mutton and rice. Of course, this was garnished with vegetables. We all anticipate our day and prepare our palate for a delectable meal.
Mama gave us the opportunity to let us feel special although we were poor. The birthday months for the four of us were February, March, April, and November. So, the month of November was the celebratory time with a cake that represented all the birthdays. We sang and drank amongst ourselves without friends.
One December mama was without money, but she creatively transformed one of her gathered waist dresses to make a simple dress for each of us.
She even extended her love and kindness to strangers as well as family members. The latter who, sometimes turned out to be unfair in their dealings, but she never negated on her words.
In one instance our third cousin came for an evening at our house and that evening turned out to be eighteen years! Mama treated her just like her own daughter. She had health issues and an operation was a necessity. Mama paid all expenses without any murmuring and without any help from either parent.
One of the beauties of this relationship is that this cousin, Kim, accepted Jesus Christ as Lord, and Saviour and have been living a Christian lifestyle ever since.
Mister Lee affectionately called ‘grocery man’,a stranger became a family member. He carried the groceries on Sunday evening, if my mother could not carry it on Saturday evening. and he got his dinner. Eventually, he came every Sunday evening, and his dinner was always prepared. This went on for years.
His mannerism was strange. He did not take any public transport; he walked to any place he was going. He rarely spoke and had a quick gait. Yet as children we looked forward to his company.
On reflection, as an adult I discovered that Mister Lee had no family, but Mama never revealed this to us, and I praise God for how she accepted him.
Again, my mother’s kindness came about when her friend who was living in the United States, could not care for her mother who had Cancer so Mama cared for her until her death. Her friend was so grateful that she invited her to America where my mother stayed and worked for thirty years. She is now retired and lives in her own home with my sister in Jamaica.
According to Mark Twain “kindness is a language even the blind can see.”
Jesus Christ is the embodiment of love and wants the best for us. He paid the ultimate price for us by dying on the cross because he wants us to secured our redemption.
No wonder John chapter 15:16-17(NKJV study Bible) “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you that you love one another”
I am convinced that love and kindness are so entwined that once exercised in the spirit they have kissed each other!
